Game Rules for Fives Up

2 or 4 Player Cutthroat

Domino Sets: DominoChamp offers game play with Double Six and Double Nine Domino Sets. Double Nines are currently only available in Tournaments.

Drawing: When playing with a Double Six set, you have the option of drawing seven (7) or nine (9) dominoes in two player games. In a four player game, only seven (7) dominoes can be drawn. When playing with a Double Nine set, nine (9) dominoes are drawn in two and four player games.

Summary: The game is played by placing a tile on the end of a matching perimeter domino or matching spinner domino. To score points, the ends of the perimeter tiles must add up to a multiple of five. Also, being the player to place your last domino (to "domino") scores points by adding the remaining dominoes in the other players' hand(s).

Game Start

Each player draws his bones. The remaining tiles move into the Boneyard for future draws. The player with the highest double (the spinner) starts the game by placing that tile on the table. If no one has a double, then the highest domino starts the game. Each player takes a turn placing matching bones on the table in a clockwise rotation.

Game Play

After the first domino is placed on the table, play order goes in a clockwise rotation. The next player can place a domino at any matching peremeter tile or matching open end of spinner. If a player does not have any matching dominoes, he must draw from the boneyard until they choose a playable tile. If there are no dominoes left in the boneyard, the players' turn is skipped (passed). Note: Double Six Four Player games do not have Boneyards and players must always pass if they do not have playable tiles.

Scoring

The sum of the dots (pips) on the ends of perimeter dominoes is called the "Board Count" and is shown on the table. If you place a tile on the table that sets the Board Count to a multiple of five (5, 10, 15, 20, etc.), you score those points. Spinners are counted as a perimeter tile if it's the first domino played or if only one side has been played. If a spinner has dominoes placed at two or more sides then it is no longer counted in the Board Count. Games at DominoChamp play to 150 or 250 points.

Ending A Hand

The round ends when one player has played all of the bones in his hand. This player is the winner of the round and goes first next round.

If no players can make a play and the boneyard is empty, the game is "locked up" and the round is over. In this case, the player with the lowest total in his hand wins the round.

The player who wins the round adds the total of the remaining players' hands, rounded to the nearest multiple of five, to his score.

If the round is locked up and two players have the lowest total, then no one receives any additional points. The next round is started by the player who draws the highest domino.

Variations

Below are some variations of Fives Up that we offer at DominoChamp.

Block

Block is played the same as Fives Up with the following exception: points are only scored at the end of a round by totaling the remaining tiles in the other players' hand(s). Points are not scored on a play where the Board Count totals a multiple of five, as in Fives Up.

No Spinner

No Spinner means that only two sides of the spinner can be played, instead of the usual four.
